So you want to get a new suit. The first thing people notice about a suit is the color, and it matters a lot when you want to make the first impression. Probably the reason you’re buying a suit is to have some formal wear, but not all suits needs to be formal. Charcoal grey, black or navy blue fit most every circumstance, for work or for night’s out, but you can change your wardrobe if you choose a suit in a very different color. You need to match your suit to your wholesale shirts.
If you’re like my boyfriend and wear a suit only to weddings and funerals, you probably need a generic, all-purpose suit. Women can safely wear a skirt with a blazer or a suit jacket for such occasions, but pantsuits are also okay. The most common color for the generic suit is charcoal grey, but navy blue and black suits are also okay. If you are pale or have red hair, however, you should avoid deep blacks.
If you find yourself needing a second suit, go with another all-purpose one. You might save your black or grey suit for funerals, and get a “softer” brown one. It might be unsuitable for business meetings or very formal events, but is okay for academic occasions, for example. Light grey suits work great for summer and fall and match well with brighter, colorful shirts or ties. Lighter colors might work great for you if your skin is darker… or very pale.
Remember that both men and women can accessorize to reduce the impact of the suit or increase it. A black suit matched with white wholesale shirts and dark, patterned tie creates a different impression than one matched with blue shirt and red tie. In general men are limited to brown or black shoes and belt, but women have many more options - not to mention the style of the footwear! You should be able to style your suit the way you need it.
