We all know this ladies: shopping for plus-sized workwear is a veritable nightmare. I’ve always known this, but the past weeks made it very, very real. As a plus-size girl, I don’t usually buy clothes online, and I need to spend hours to find a perfect set of clothes in my mall. There’s either a set of “under 21” clothes with plus sized lines of party clothing, or off-the-rack collections from a supermarket, boring and drab. To find good clothes for wear I need to think and reconsider.
First of all, I bought a couple of thick, stretchy, high-waisted pencil shirts (I got a navy one, a black one and a gray one). They can be worn with basically any shirt or blouse, creating the feel of many different dresses. I can combine my skirts with thrift store tops, and match them with blazers or cardigans for the professional feel. If the top gets too small, I can just tuck it into a pencil skirt.
Invest in a tailor - not to make your clothes, but to tailor your clothes to size. Seriously, don’t buy another dress or skirt, take your basic clothes to tailor instead. It’s the best investment you’ll ever make.
Match these tops and skirts (or actual plain dresses) with accessories - scarves, necklaces, cardigans, brooches, hats - you can turn a simple black dress into something infinitely more stylish with a large scarf and a hat.
Don’t forget to accessorize your hair - many women tend to wear the same style of hairdo to work every day. If you change your hair, other ladies at your workplace will literally act as if you got a makeover. You don’t have to dye them, but consider accessories like scrunchies, clips, ponytails, braids or headbands - this will really be noticed. And what’s best, people will say things like “I like this” or “I liked that one better” - and we all know how hard it is to get feedback from your workmates. You can also experiment with a new style of makeup once in a while - if you wear plain cosmetics, wear a bright lipstick once in a while.
